Our Phospholipids
What are phospholipids?
Phospholipids are a special group of lipids that play a central role in all living cells. The best-known representatives of this group include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylethanolamine.
All phospholipids have in common that they consist of a water-soluble head (hydrophilic) and a fat-soluble tail (lipophilic). This structure enables the formation of cell membranes and other vital structures in plants and animals. In addition, phospholipids ensure that nutrients, signals, and energy are transported efficiently – in short, they are essential for the functioning of every cell. It is precisely these natural properties that make phospholipids ideal aids when it comes to stabilizing sensitive ingredients in dietary supplements and allowing them to develop their full effect.
What is phosphatidylcholine?
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the fat-soluble form of the vitamin-like nutrient choline and an essential phospholipid for the human body. Its molecular structure consists of a water-soluble choline head and two fat-soluble fatty acids. In addition to building and maintaining cell membranes, its important functions in the body include signal transmission between cells, supporting normal liver function, and transporting fats in the body. Phosphatidylcholine plays a particularly important role during pregnancy and breastfeeding: it supports healthy fetal growth, promotes brain and neural tube development and also protects the mother’s liver.
Phospholipids as active ingredients in dietary supplements
Phospholipids are not only used in the formulation of active ingredients but also offer a range of health benefits themselves. Phospholipids, especially phosphatidylcholine (PC), have been used in dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products for decades.

How are our phospholipids obtained?
Phospholipids are unique molecules found in nature and are essential for life. But what makes them so special and what makes them such talented ingredients? Our Phospho-Lee Pete provides some exciting insights.
1. Cultivation and harvest
To obtain phospholipids in an industrial scale, natural sources such as sunflower seeds and soybeans are used. These plants are primarily cultivated for the production of vegetable oil.
2. Oil mill
The seeds and beans are pressed in the oil mill, separating the oil. This produces lecithin (approx. 1.5%) as a by-product. This raw lecithin can either be used in the food industry as a natural emulsifier or being further refined.
3. Purification
At Lipoid, the raw lecithin is gently purified using special processes. This removes unwanted accompanying substances, leaving behind highly pure phospholipids in concentrated form.
4. Phospholipids
The highly pure phospholipids obtained in this way can be used in a variety of ways – e.g. in dietary supplements, cosmetic products, and pharmaceutical formulations.
How are liposomes and emulsions produced?
Liposomes:
In water, phospholipids assemble into a double membrane that closes into a spherical shape. Inside these so-called liposomes is an aqueous core that can contain water-soluble substances such as vitamin C or B vitamins. To produce liposomes, phospholipids are dispersed in water and formed into stable, nanoscale vesicles through the application of energy (e.g., stirring, ultrasound, or extrusion). The result: sensitive ingredients are effectively protected and can be better absorbed by the body.
Emulsions:
With fat-soluble active ingredients such as coenzyme Q10 or vitamin D, phospholipids form a stabilizing single layer at the interface between oil and water. This creates emulsions: finely distributed droplets in water with the active ingredient in the fat-soluble core. The production of a stable nano-emulsion requires a high energy input, for example from high-pressure homogenizers.
