From liposomes to emulsions – phospholipids as the key to effective carrier systems

Nutritional supplements contain various active ingredients that are important for the body. However, these active ingredients are often susceptible to degradation (e.g., through oxidation) or cannot be absorbed by the body. As a result, dietary supplements cannot develop their full effect.

Targeted encapsulation of the active ingredients can both increase their stability and significantly improve their bioavailability. Phospholipids are particularly efficient in this regard. As a building block of every cell membrane – regardless of whether it is of plant or animal origin – they are physiologically well tolerated and highly functional at the same time. Thanks to their special molecular structure, they enable the formation of innovative carrier systems such as liposomes and emulsions, depending on the active ingredient in question. This stabilizes sensitive active ingredients, improves their absorption, and maximizes their bioavailability.

Different phospholipid-based systems are suitable depending on the nature of the active ingredients:

Liposomes are particularly suitable for formulating water-soluble active ingredients such as vitamin C or B vitamins,as their aqueous core, surrounded by a protective phospholipid bilayer, specifically improves the stability and bioavailability of these ingredients.

Depending on the technical equipment available, there are various options for producing liposomes:

Pure phospholipids:

Allow for flexible formulations but require higher energy input during production.

LIPOID Liposome Basic:

A ready-to-use liposome concentrate that allows for easy production by stirring with a rotor-stator – ideal even with simpler technical equipment

Substances such as coenzyme Q10 and vitamin D are fat-soluble. Phospholipids form a single layer around these substances, which results in an emulsion in an aqueous system. Similar to liposomes, emulsions also specifically increase the stability and bioavailability of these ingredients.

Depending on the technical equipment available, there are various options for producing emulsions:

Pure phospholipids:

Offer maximum flexibility in formulation, but require higher energy input during production (e.g., high-pressure homogenization).

PHOSAL®:

Phospholipid-rich pre-formulation in vegetable oil that enables the simple production of self-emulsifying systems. A rotor-stator system is sufficient for dissolving active ingredients.

PhytoSolve® is our platform technology that demonstrates the potential and possibilities of our phospholipids in the formulation of fat-soluble active ingredients. This technology enables the production of clear and transparent nano-emulsions in which fat-soluble substances such as Q10 or vitamins A, D, E, and K can be optimally dissolved. The result: improved stability, high bioavailability, and attractive sensory properties.

In addition, phospholipids can not only be used in the formulation of active ingredients but also offer a range of health benefits themselves. Phospholipids, especially phosphatidylcholine (PC), have been used in dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products for decades.
